English
Jesus said, ‘I will give you what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, what no hand has touched, and what has not arisen in the human mind.’
Interpretation
Jesus presents his teachings as a mystery he must reveal. Although this would seem to come from the later stages of the book’s development, which focus on hidden wisdom, the concept of esoterism is found even in the earlier stages.
Parallels
Isaiah
64.4 From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him.
1 Corinthians
2.9–10 But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him’. These things God has revealed to us through the spirit, for the spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
