Saying 48

English

Jesus said, ‘If two people make peace with each other in one house, they will say to the mountain, “Move away,” and it will move.’

Interpretation

Saying 48 asserts that where people ‘make peace’ in accordance with Jesus’ teachings, they will be able to accomplish great things. (Compare Saying 30.) The saying entered the synoptic tradition as a comment that trust in God will result in any prayer being fulfilled.

Parallels

Mark

11.22–24 Jesus answered them, ‘Have faith in God. Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, “Be taken up and thrown into the sea,” and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.’

Matthew

17.20 ‘For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.’

21.21–22 Jesus answered them, ‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” it will be done. Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.’
