English
Jesus said, ‘Whoever has grown wealthy, that person should become a king. But whoever possesses power, let that person disown his power.’
Interpretation
The instruction to ‘disown’ power more closely resembles the criticisms of worldliness (as obstacles to salvation) in later additions to the book, than the criticism of material needs (as distractions from the evangelistic mission) in earlier portions. Compare especially Saying 2, which talks about becoming a king.
