English
Jesus said, ‘Adam came into being from great power and great wealth, but he was not worthy of you, because, had he been worthy, he would not have tasted death.’
Interpretation
Saying 85 provides further comments about the primordial first man. He was created ‘out of great power and great wealth’, showing that he initially existed in a state of perfect union with God’s spirit. His sin broke this union, so that he fell into ‘poverty’, which is now the default human condition. (Compare Sayings 3 and 29.)
